(Ballroom B)  -- These five creators have been key voices in genre media in the late 20th century. How does each of their mythologies hold up over time? Which are most compelling, influential, and inspiring ? In fifty years, which universes will still be remembered, and why? (Panelists: David B. Coe, Cullen Johnson, Grant Kruger, Lee Martindale, Libby Smith-Singleton, Amy Sturgis)

Teen Heroes and Sidekicks (Conference Room 5) – What distinguishes stories of teenage superheroes from those of adult superheroes? What attributes appeal to readers in stories about growing up as mutants, non-Muggles, aliens, etc.? (Panelists: Kerry Gilley, John Jackson Miller, Martheus Antone Wade)

Andre Norton Remembered (Conference Room 8) – Tennessee author Andre Norton wrote many young adult SF novels, and many of today's fans were first introduced to science fiction and fantasy through her books.  Join a discussion on her life, her influence on other writers and fans, and, of course, her fiction. Girlfriends in Anime – Human vs. Non (Conference Room 9) – Japanese anime has portrayed boy/girl relationships in  … interesting ways.  Learn about all the weird glitches and attributes of alien, robotic, and magic world relationships with significant others vs. the angst, jealous, cursed human-based ones.   (Host: Gloria Oliver, Sabrina Hunt)

Deep Time: How Humanity Communicates Across Millennia (Conference Room 8) – How can we best communicate with other humans separated by time scales on the order of hundreds, thousands, or even millions of years? (Host: Greg Benford)

Different Game Systems – Pros and Cons (Conference Room 9) Action!, Savage Worlds, GURPS, d20, and Percentile are just a few of the RPG systems – what are the advantages and disadvantages of each? (Panelists: E.E. Knight, Mike Preston, Sean Preston)

The Borderland of Sol: Pluto, Sedna, and Kuiper Belt Objects (Conference Room 8) – This year is the 75th anniversary of the discovery of Pluto by Clyde Trombell.  Astronomers have recently made surprising new discoveries of the outer limits of our solar system; (Panelist: Lionel Crews)

Retelling the Ancient Myths: New Adventures for Old Gods (Ballroom B) – Mythologies from various cultures have been getting facelifts or new attention.  Authors discuss their fascination with these stories.   (Panelists: Bill Allen,  Esther Friesner, and Richard Parks)

Computers and "Sexy Nerds": How Changing Technology Changed the Cerebral Hero in SF/F Television  ( Conference Room 5 ) – Just as Sherlock Holmes, the first techno-hero, emerged during the Industrial Revolution, the various incarnations of the cerebral hero in genre television correspond roughly to new innovations in computer technology.  From The Man From U.N.C.L.E.'s Illya Kuryakin to Star Trek's Mr. Spock to Buffy the Vampire Slayer's Rupert Giles, the development of television's geeks-turned-heartthrobs parallels the cultural and technological changes of the USA. (Host: Amy Sturgis)

Education Seminar: Orientation and Awards for Student Contests (Conference Room 8) - MidSouthCon will host its third education seminar for librarians, teachers, and interested attendees.  In addition, winners of student fiction and art awards will be announced.

David B. Coe Reading (Conference Room 9) – will read from SHAPERS OF DARKNESS, the fourth book in his Winds of the Forelands series.

Lovecraft's legacy has left a lasting impact on popular culture, and some of MidSouthCon's current guests have created works influenced by this author.  Join a discussion of his appeal. Using SF to Teach the Scientific Method (Conference Room 8) - Part of MidSouthCon's third seminar for educators. What constitutes science vs. pseudoscience? How do scientists address new ideas?  What are good (and bad) examples from literature and media that illustrate this? (Panelists: Eric Aitala, Greg Benford, Brett Bolen, Lionel Crews)

Screenwriting Tips (Conference Room 5) – Suggestions for budding screenwriters. (Panelists: Penny Register, Sean O'Bannon, and Brinke Stevens)

Children’s Programming: Harry Potter and Potions (Conference Room 10) – Learn the secrets to making several potions from the Slytherin Hall.

Steve Rude Demonstration and Painting Seminar (Ballroom C) – 2 hours – Watch and observe Steve Rude’ acrylic demo/workshop as he teaches a group of ten students. He will be teaching fundamental techniques that you can take home and use, taught at each student’s skill level.

Belly Dancing Workshop (Conference Room 5) – Stephanie Frye, President of Secret Belly dancers of Fandom, gives a short cultural and history lesson, and teaches a few basic moves.

Tolkien in the Humanities Classroom (Conference Room 8) – - Part of MidSouthCon's third seminar for educators. Learn how discussion of religion, Medieval literature, and comparison to Shakespearian literature are some of the examples in which J.R.R. Tolkien can be applied to liberal arts courses. (Panelists: David B. Coe, Amy Sturgis)

Costuming Workshop (Conference Room 9) - An experienced costumer provides tips and advice on costuming. (Host: Michelle Ransom)

Children’s Programming: Basic Cartooning with Greg (Cravens) the Cartoonist (Conference Room 10) – Learn the basics of cartooning from Greg the Cartoonist of the syndicated strip “The Buckets.”

Jackie Gamber Reading (Conference Room 9) – reads from REDHEART.  Humans and dragons are on the brink of war, and one dragon, Kallon Redheart, has the power to change things, if only he can face the past and the future he's stopped believing in.

Children’s Programming: 501st Legion (Conference Room 10) – 501st Legion Stormtroopers meet the kids of MidSouthCon. Ask the Stormtrropers everything you wanted to know about Star Wars. There will be a Lego build off contest to create a Star wars themed project with prizes donated by the 501st.

Life, Love, and Soul After the Apocalypse (Conference Room 5) – Stories about catastrophism, eschatology, and significant changes in the world as we know it have appeared in every generation.  How have the stories changed over time?  Are they on the rise? Richard Parks Reading (Conference Room 9) – will read from his World Fantasy Award-nominated collection, THE OGRE'S WIFE: FAIRY TALES FOR GROWNUPS, including the unpublished introductions to the stories chosen.  This reading will be the only place the two have been combined.

Imagining the World of Dragons (Conference Room 5) – What would dragon society be like?  How would a dragon's anatomy affect their behavior?  Authors contemplate the specifics of creating dragons in fiction. (Panelists: Jeff Crook, Jackie Gamber, Steve Hickman, E.E. Knight, Jana G. Oliver)

The Librarian as Science Fictional Hero (Conference Room 8) - From curator of forbidden tomes or powerful artifacts, to guidance counselor for vampire-slaying high schoolers (Giles from Buffy), to Gotham City curator/crimefighter (Barbara Gordon/Batgirl), the librarian in speculative fiction has both exemplified and defied the stereotypical image of this profession. Can Comics Conquer the Midsouth? (Conference Room 9)- Despite all the migration toward the South, the center of the comic-book universe remains New York City. They're published there, set there -- and, disproportionately, sold there, according to a study by John Jackson Miller, writer for Marvel, Dark Horse, and Comics Buyer's Guide. Join John and local retailer/publisher Michael Tierney for a discussion of ways to develop the Southern comics scene! (Panelists: John Jackson Miller, Michael Tierney, Donny Juengling)

Children’s Programming: Children’s Masquerade Parade (Conference Room 10) – Show off your costume you created or brought from home. Parade will begin at the Children’s Programming room and wander through the Con rooms to end at the Registration area for the award ceremony.

Einstein’s Theories In Science Fiction (Conference Room 8) - 2005 is the centennial of Einstein’s miracle year in which he published three papers which would lead to the revolution of 20th century physics.  Many good science fiction stories have used the ideas in these papers as background for these stories.  This seminar will review these seminal papers and the authors that explored their ideas.
