SF/Fantasy Writing Contest

This contest is open to all Middle School (6th-8th grade) and High School (9th-12th grade) students.

  1. Submissions must be in the field of science fiction or fantasy.
  2. Submissions shall be no more than 2500 words in length
  3. All submissions must include a cover page with the entrant's name and contact information.
  4. Submissions must have a header with the title and page number. Do not include the entrants name or other identifying information on the individual pages.
  5. Proper formatting is required: double-spaced, 8.5" x 11".
  6. Electronic submissions must be an attachment to email in either PDF or RTF format. State "Student Writing Contest" in the email subject.
  7. Students may submit multiple entries but only one prize will be awarded to any one entrant.

SF/Fantasy Art Contest

This contest is open to all Elementary School (5th grade and below), Middle School (6th-8th grade) and High School (9th-12th grade) students.

  1. The artwork must be an original work with either a science fiction or fantasy theme, in one of the following media: pencil, pen & ink, pastels, charcoal, paint, or digital illustration.
  2. It must be a flat two-dimensional piece that is suitable for hanging, at least 5"x7" and no more than 11" by 17".
  3. It may be an illustration of an existing story or an original idea.
  4. Entries will be judged on their originality and creativity, artistic technique, and the use of science fiction and fantasy elements.
  5. All submissions should include a submission cover page with the entrant's name and contact information.
  6. Students may submit multiple entries but only one prize will be awarded to any one entrant.

Prizes

All contestants will receive a certificate for participating. The Finalists will be invited to attend MidSouthCon on Saturday during the convention. All Finalists will receive MidSouthCon tee shirts and free membership to MidSouthCon for themselves and their parents. The Finalists shall also receive complimentary registrations for the following year's convention for themselves and their parents or one guest each. The winners will be announced to the public at MidSouthCon on Saturday of the convention, but winners need not be present to win.

Other prizes may be included.

Winners may be required to provide proof of eligibility/age.By submitting the student agrees to give unlimited right to use the work for advertising and promotional purposes as well as the student's name and likeness.

Mission

Our primary focuses are literacy and education. To that end, we have held an annual convention in Memphis, TN for over two decades hosting numerous authors, editors, scientists, and artists. We also hold a free seminar for educators and librarians, a writers' conference with workshops by award winning authors and editors, and annual student art and writing contests.

MidSouthCon is presented by Mid-South Science and Fictions Conventions Inc. a non-profit type 501(c)(3) Corporation. Donations are welcome (and are tax deductible).
